Alex hits the dunes

Mountaineer, athlete and South Pole Antarctic man-hauler, Alex Harris, is playing in the dunes of the Empty Quarter. This is a scouting expedition to test carts, man-haul weights and sand conditions. For many years Alex has considered a foot crossing of the Empty Quarter – the Rub’ al Khali desert, which spans the Arabian Peninsula. If successful, it would be a world first.

This isn’t a solo undertaking; Alex is accompanied by entrepreneur Marco Broccardo and adventure racer Dave Joyce.

There are reasons aplenty why no-one else has crossed the Empty Quarter on foot; distance, difficulty of moving across sand, water access (and limitation on the amount of weight that can be man-hauled), heat…

Alex has extensive experience and after this scouting trip he’ll be ready to advance his team’s planning and preparations for an attempt at the end of this year.
