FEATs on bike

There are certainly many more than this one listed below… ‘FEATs on bike’ are generally distance rides – certain routes, like Freedom Challenge, city-to-city, circumnavigation – done in record time.

Freedom Trail
Biker: Alex Harris
Date: 17 – 28 June 2011
Distance: approx. 2300 kilometres
Duration: 12 days, 15 hours, 30 mins
Route: The Freedom Trail is a defined off-road route from Pietermaritzburg to the Diemersfontein Wine Estate, near Paarl. The Freedom Trail is open throughout the year but in June/July the ‘Race Across South Africa’ (RASA) takes place; this is when riders aim to set record times on the route. RASA is unsupported. Meals and accommodation are provided at approximately 25 support stations spaced at intervals approximately 100 kilometres apart along the length of the Trail. The front riders just pass through most of these, riding for up to 18 hours a day; those touring the trail overnight at the stops. Only two dark zones are enforced, because of wild animals, for the riders’ safety. Previous record of 13 days, 15 hours, 50 minutes was set in June 2009 by Tim James.
