These two men, Clyde Barendse and Steve Black, raced each other – by surfski and on foot – over a distance of 2000 kilometres from Cape Town to Durban.
Fresh out of school Clyde – also known as “Skinny Cappuccino” – sailed from Durban to North America. Now 35, Clyde enjoys last-minute challenges without concern for preparation. He’s up for anything – which is how he ended up on a surfski and racing against the legendary ultra runner, Steve Black.
Sport has always been a part of Steve’s life. At 60, Steve has enough gold and Silver medals earned at Comrades, Dusi and a host of ultra distance events to sink Clyde’s surfski. Just for fun, Steve ran 1000 kilometres from the Underberg to Knysna to visit his daughter.
In this FEAT talk, Clyde and Steve tell us about their 30-day surfski and running challenge. FEAT Jo’burg, October 2014.
